BECOME A CERTIFIED HOLISTIC HEALTH COACH

In few years back, I studied at The Institute For Integrative Nutrition, also known as IIN; it transformed my life and motivated me to begin this beautiful self-love journey. It also drove me to go out and help others in their own struggles, something that has been the purpose behind my actions so far.

WHAT IS A HEALTH COACH?

We are spending more money than ever on our health care systems and yet, according to the World Health Organisation, the top three causes of death are dietary related illnesses – heart diseases, stroke and pulmonary diseases. At the same time there’s an all time high of depression, stress, anxiety, mental illnesses and things like eating disorders are on the rise all around the world.

And so, there is a massive demand for a new and different approach towards health – this is where a health coach comes into the picture.

I would rather like to call it a health support mentor, someone who educates, encourages and supports people in their journey to build new healthy habits and create sustainable lifestyle changes. In the gym you have a PT to hold you accountable to your workouts, so why not have someone do the same in the kitchen and in your long-term goal of living a healthy and happy life?

During the studies, health coaches acquire a broad understanding of many different dietary theories and tools to mentor people who seek to improve their overall health and wellbeing. IIN has a strong focus on the idea that health isn’t just what you eat, but it also depends on things like relationships, work, exercise and spirituality. Duh, right?! Well, its a quite revolutionary idea compared to the traditional nutrition and the general health care system which focuses on disease treatment. IIN also strongly supports the idea of bio-individuality, that one size does not fit all.

In short, a Health Coach is someone who is essentially a life coach who emphasises on food, self-care and helps you with general healthy lifestyle choices. What a Health Coach is NOT is a nutritionist or someone who is qualified to prescribe any medications. Neither can a health coach take the place of a GP or any other form of psychological or psychiatric counsellor or Doctor. A Health Coach is NOT supposed to replace any of the above, rather he/she is there to support and complement other health care professionals.

THE CURRICULUM

I was impressed by the set up of the curriculum! It’s broken down into weekly modules, which allows you to consume the content in small digestible bits. I was working on The Uma Show and was tied up with a lot of other things while doing IIN. Being a mother of a seventeen year old son and having a family, I also had things to be taken care of as far as home and family life was concerned. However, I still had enough time to do IIN on the side. I probably spent around 5-7 hours a week in total on the course. I know of people who do IIN while working full-time with kids and I know of people who don’t work at all and do the course; either way it’s totally doable.

It teaches over 150 different dietary theories while combining coaching techniques with in depth business training so that you leave with the greatest chance of creating a successful life as a Health Coach. The unique nutrition theory takes into account your relationships, work, exercise and spirituality as well as what you eat to build optimum health within. In fact, that’s one of the best parts of IIN! It introduces you to so many different diets and ways of thinking, without prejudice, so that you are able to truly form your own opinion and experiment first hand on your body to discover what lifestyle suits you best.

HOW ARE THE TEACHERS?

About half of the program is taught by Joshua Rosenthal, the founder and director of IIN. There are also many other amazing speakers including leading doctors, PhDs, researchers and authorities who are at the forefront of the health and wellness field. The list currently includes Mark Hyman, Deepak Chopra, Arianna Huffington, Gabrielle Bernstein just to name a few.

This was another highlight of the program for me; learning from so many different people who all have very different, and oftentimes opposing viewpoints. It really encourages you to question everything and always look at things from an open mind.

WHAT KIND OF CAREER PATHS CAN YOU TAKE AFTER GRADUATING FROM IIN?

Did you know that Health and Wellness is the next trillion dollar industry? It is one of the most lucrative financial opportunities around today. Why? Because everyone wants better health, they want to look younger live longer and enjoy life more as they age. With growing stress and increasing environmental hazards, people are becoming more conscious about health which is booming the wellness industry like never before. Preventive care is only going to grow in the future and there is an increase in the demand of health and wellness professionals around the world. So obviously, working as a health coach (online, face to face, group coaching) is one of the most promising careers you can choose after doing this course, but that’s not the only career path you need to choose. In my intake, there were a few people who were also qualified PT’s or yoga teachers. Some others went into Corporate Health Coaching, some started their own catering or restaurant business, others developed e-books/recipe books, and many more that dove into the health/wellness blogging scene. In certain countries like the US where health coaching is more recognised, you might even be able to secure a job alongside a medical doctor who wishes to provide nutritional guidance to patients. On the flipside, many people do IIN purely for personal reasons such as bettering their own health or that of their family. Personally, I think that IIN is great whether you are looking to build a career in the field or just want to work on bettering yourself and your health.

MY EXPERIENCE

Studying at IIN was indeed a turning point in my life. Without IIN, I would never have created the life that I am living now. My own story was no different than yours. Not too long ago, I was a super busy entrepreneur, working 18 hours a day, managing home, attending events, socializing, travelling extensively, filming and managing my various TV shows, and doing everything else that comes with having your own business. My health was free falling…and I began to experience countless health issues.

Pigmentation and melasma, weak and falling hair, acidity, mood swings, intense PMS and frequent sluggishness and lethargy had become a part of my daily life. With busy work schedules and no time at hand, I was feeling vulnerable. To hide my melasma and pigmentation, I had to put heavy layers of make-up for my shoots, which ultimately aggravated the issue further.

For my hair, For almost five years, I struggled with my skin and hair issues, by visiting multiple doctors, and spending huge amounts of money on laser and chemical treatments. I tried almost everything and anything that people suggested to me, but nothing worked. All those solutions were short term and the issues kept coming back.

Eventually, I realised that these skin and hair issues actually had their root in my failing gut health. And to improve my gut health, I began to make small lifestyle changes with the help of studies I had at IIN like drinking more water, eating gluten-free food, ( as I am intorelant to gluten) adding more greens to my diet, being more conscious about my food choices, meditating, maintaining a gratitude journal etc. And within a period of seven months, I began to see the difference! I was healing! I realized that my health problems were the byproduct of a shoddy digestive system. My gut health was affecting my energy level, my mood, my hair and skin. Since that moment, I’ve worked to turn my health around with the help of all the knowledge I’ve gathered during my course at IIN. I went on a pursuit of ultimate health and immersed myself in all of the tools that could mend my body from the inside out. I realised that beauty is skin deep. It’s a journey inward. And for that, you don’t need to spend huge amounts of money, but only make small lifestyle changes that are long-lasting.

experience

Along with my story, I would also like to share the story of my son’s health and how I dealt with it with the help of IIN. Seven years back my eleven year old son got pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital. When he came back from the hospital, every week he was falling sick, every morning he was waking up with a cold, running nose and I was constantly on the rounds with doctors, to better his health. He was on multiple medications, anti histamines, antibiotics, inhalers, was getting constant asthma attacks, something he had never faced before. From his health to his personal, his grades in school and social life, everything was getting affected. For almost four and a half years, I could not find a permanent solution to his health. Every doctor we met was either adding more medicines or suggesting a higher dose; however finally I met a doctor, who with the help of kinesiology tests, figured out that my son was lactose intolerant. And that’s when, with the help of all the information I had, I put him on a dairy free diet. Within a span of eight months, all his health issues disappeared and soon, he was off medications and healthy and happy as ever. From then to now, it’s been three years, and he has never fallen severely sick again. So this health journey and my health coaching at IIN has really helped me take care of my family better apart from generating a new revenue source.

Since then, my journey into health and wellness started and I began to study and practice holistic health. And now, I am driven to help all the others like me in their health journey!

At the end of the day, I think it comes down to which career or personal path you want to go down and it needs to feel right for YOU. I’ve shared my opinion, now the decision is yours.
